Last Saturday, I ran a 5 mile muddy obstacle course to raise money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Multiple Sclerosis decided to take residence in my family and raising money is my small way of making a positive impact. And really, who wouldn’t want to have a good time running around a park making a fool of yourself and getting so muddy you’re cleaning dirt out of your ears for 3 days?
This is my third time doing a mud run. I love them. They provide an interesting and exciting challenge for me that I just don’t get out of a regular run. They are fun but I get to do things that are kind of scary. I had just started my healthy journey when I did the Warrior Dash several years ago. Mud runs were just starting to ”hit the scene”. There were a couple of obstacles I couldn’t do and I was scared to death on the cargo rope climb. I did Muckfest last year and there was an obstacle where you had to get over these huge sewer pipes. I couldn’t get myself over. This year I completed all of the obstacles! Including the sewer pipes that eluded me the previous year. This run really showed me how far I have come from 3 years ago. I’m stronger and that cargo climb isn’t quite as scary. : )
Muckfest MS is a 5 mile course with an option to do just a 5K. I love this race because they have lots of obstacles and they are much more interesting than what I experienced in Warrior Dash. The day of the race was rainy and chilly. It didn’t matter, my friend and I were ready for a muddy good time. We had cheerleaders that snapped some great photos of us and many of the obstacles (the rain and humidity seemed to fog up some pics but you’ll get the idea). Bring on the mud!
We ran through these big balls which were deceptively difficult to pass. If you lost your footing, you were in a mud pool which is exactly what happen to my partner in crime.
Don’t lose your balance here or you’re going in a pool of…you guessed it…mud.
I tried to implement my Crossfit rope skills on this one but my skills suck and I ended up in the mud pool.
Here I am, starting the my way up the cargo rope climb
Make sure you make cheesy poses in the middle of the course for the camera! My mud run t-shirt has gotten too big! need a new one : )
Can you walk on water?
Climbing over tree trunks in a mud pit. I never could have done this one last year!
Other obstacles included jumping off a platform into a pool of water, walking a teeter-totter, crawling through and over sewer pipes, crawling through sludge in a pitch black tent, rock climbing wall (which I fell off of!), tightrope across a pool of mud, climb over horse jumping fences, and more I can’t even think of at the moment. A seriously awesome list of challenges.
All of this completed in 1 hour 37 minutes. My partner and I did a light jog/fast walk for the duration of the race. We had to wait in line at a couple of the obstacles or we would have been done even faster. Afterwards, we were hooked up with a ham or turkey sandwich, chips, a cookie and 2 beers! A t-shirt and samples of tide rounded out the swag.
Overall, this is a top notch mud run! If you have never tried one and don’t mind getting a little dirty, do it. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you go and whether or not you can complete all of the obstacles. The great thing about these races is you can challenge yourself at any level.
Have you done a mud run or obstacle course race? Which ones? If you haven’t, which one have you thought about doing?
