Healthy Eats: Discovering Pummelos aka Pomelo

When February rolls around, it’s a sad state of affairs for me; clementines are no longer in season!  I usually switch to oranges but this time I decided to expand my horizons.  Since I no longer do things like try the latest flavor of Doritos, I figure I should expand my healthy eating repertoire.

In comes the Pummelo.   I found these big giant citrus fruits next to the grapefruit and decided to buy one.   The Pummelo is native to southeastern Asia and member of the grapefruit family.  They boast more than 100% of your daily vitamin C and is a good source of potassium.  I had to go to youtube to figure out how to peel the thing.  Here’s some pictures of my pummelo discovery.

First I scored the skin into segments and began to peel it.  The skin is very thick.

After peeling, I revealed a wonderful looking fruit

I then began to peel apart the segments and removed the fruit from the membranes.  The membranes are much thicker than you find on a orange.   I found it to be time consuming and a general pain in the ass to peel the fruit out of the membranes.

So I finally get to give it a taste.   Although a member of the grapefruit family, it doesn’t have the sour taste of a grapefruit.   I would describe the flavor as slightly sweet and kind of mild…mellow.

Overall, I enjoyed it a lot and it definitely provides some variety.   I’m not sure if I will be eating them very often because it was very time consuming to peel.  I was really hoping to find something great. Instead, I’m a but underwhelmed.

Have your tried a pummelo?

  1. Have never tried this fruit but pass it every time I'm at the grocery store. Have never had the guts to grab one. Sounds like it was pretty good!
